After lunch, we cruise further upstream to visit the Stanley Spencer Gallery in Cookham and take a walk around the village he once described as ‘Heaven on Earth’, before cruising through Marlow to Hurley. From Henry VIII’s Hampton Court past Windsor Castle to Henley, with frequent stops allowing plenty of time to wander and explore as we follow this old Viking trading route through some of England’s prettiest counties. There are also good cycling and walking opportunities along the ever-present Thames Towpath. Relax on deck this morning as Magna Carta glides past the enchanting scenery of the Royal River Thames. Unfortunatley, we were only aboard Magna Carta for 2-nights/3-days and so only had the pleasure to cruise from Henley to Windsor. We were delighted with the scenery afforded by this cruise as the luxury Magna Carta glided along the river at a speed of no more than 6 mph. This morning we tour Peter Freebody’s boatyard nearby and watch in wonder as the traditional craftsmen at work, build and restore classic wooden craft. Then, an earlier lunch, followed by a drive to Oxford for a fascinating tour of Christ Church, Oxford’s grandest college, founded by Cardinal Wolsey and then again by King Henry VIII. The magnificent surroundings were also where Lewis Carroll wrote Alice in Wonderland. We were then transferred to Magna Carta at her mooring on the River Thames in Henley-on-Thames, home of the famous Henley Royal Regatta. The River Thames (especially this section of the river) in our opinion proved to be one of the most scenic rivers we have sailed and one that we hope to return to and explore more of.
